Elephant Lunch Break…

Posted in Uncategorized by gregmironchuk on August 19, 2011

Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus elephants, chowing down in Boston's Downtown Crossing.

For some number of years, when The Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus came to town, the Circus people would march the elephants from wherever they had to stash their train, to The Boston Garden, to have a week of Circus… not surprisingly, they would make a great Publicity Event out of it. In 1983, they brought ’em all down to Boston’s Retail District, on Washington Street, and had ’em eat a bucketload of lettuce, and whatever else elephants like to eat.
The photo was made from the awning that The Jordan Marsh Co., a department store, had overhanging Washington Street.

Isn’t that the Filene’s awning? I think Jordan Marsh is on the other side of Summer Street. Great picture- thanks for sharing!
