Faded Glory

Archbishop of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, Bernard Cardinal Law, offers up a Chalice of wine, during Easter Liturgy, at The Cathedral of The Holy Cross, in Boston... April 4th, 1999.

I was the photographer for “The Pilot”, the Archdiocesan newspaper in Boston (and the oldest Catholic publication in the U.S.), in 1987 and ’88… a pretty good gig… I was recovering from back surgery, and it didn’t involve a lot of Heavy Lifting. Father Bernard was a very interesting guy… extraordinarily political, within the Roman Hierarchy, and often touted as likely to be the first American Pope. His fortunes turned, during the Priest Sexual Abuse Scandals… and became the Poster Boy for not weeding out the predators in The Priesthood. Bernard was, as always, a Good Soldier… Pope John Paul II recalled him to Rome, and his ambitions evaporated.
